Dr. Joseph Cuschieri Appointed Trauma Medical Director at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG)
We are pleased to announce that Joseph Cuschieri, MD, FACS, currently Professor of Surgery at the University of Washington, has been appointed the next Trauma Medical Director at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG), commencing March 1, 2021. He also will be a Professor in the Department of Surgery.
Dr. Cuschieri currently serves as the Associate Medical Director of Surgical Services at Harborview Medical Center, and Program Director for the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at the University of Washington. His national service has included active roles in the American College of Surgeons Committee of Trauma as the State of Washington Chair of the Committee of Trauma, and as a member of the National Committee. Additionally, he has been active in the Association for Academic Surgery, Society of University Surgeons, Surgical Infection Society, Shock Society, and the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma. Dr. Cuschieri’s research interests are in the fields of inflammation, organ failure, functional outcome following injury, and long-term immunologic dysfunction following injury. He has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed articles, and has been a Principal Investigator or Co-Principal Investigator on several NIH-funded grants.
Dr. Cuschieri earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Michigan and his Medical Degree from Wayne State University in Detroit. He completed his general surgery residency and surgical critical care fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital, and a NIH T32-Fellowship in Trauma/Burn at the University of Washington. Dr. Cuschieri is certified by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery and in Surgical Critical Care.
Dr. Cuschieri has mentored over 60 students, residents, and fellows, for which he was recognized with the John K. Stevenson Faculty Teaching Award in Surgery. He has a busy clinical practice and helped to develop an Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center at Harborview. He has been recognized for his clinical excellence by both Seattle Magazine and Seattle Met Magazine as one of the top surgeons in the region.
He will be coming to the San Francisco Bay area with his wife Abby Collins-Cuschieri and his children, Taj and Tegan.
